The role of Youth Choir Director is an exciting new post at Nottingham Cathedral. The Cathedral Music Department is entering an ambitious new phase of development and we are looking for an outstanding youth animateur with the drive and commitment to help develop and deliver the Cathedral’s Youth Programme. The post holder will work alongside the Assistant Director of Music and Cathedral Organist and be line managed by a supportive Director of Music.

Main Responsibilities
- Conducting the current Youth Choir (25 children aged 8-18) at rehearsals, Masses, and concerts (two per annum). Rehearsals take place on Fridays, 6pm-7pm in Cathedral Hall (during term time) with an accompanist. Youth Choir currently sing for up to two Sunday 6pm Masses per month (with rehearsal from 5pm). Youth Choir also sing alongside the Cathedral Choir for 11.15am Mass about once a year.
- Working with the Director of Music to set up a new Youth Choir to animate further liturgies at the Cathedral, particularly the Saturday 6.30pm Vigil Masses.
- Forging links with local schools to recruit new members to both Youth Choirs through singing assemblies and workshops.
- Organising singing outreach projects with schools with the active support of the Director of Music.
- Assist in the tutoring of Youth Choir members in music theory lessons and preparing for ABRSM exams.
Person Specification
- An outstanding trainer of young voices, with the ability to motivate and inspire singers.
- Experience of working with young people in an inclusive atmosphere.
- Ambition and energy to develop high standards of music making.
- Confident keyboard skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with confidence in communicating with children and their parents.
- Educated to degree level or equivalent in any subject (but should have music qualifications).
- Understanding of best practice in safeguarding children.
- Ability to prioritise and manage time efficiently.
- Excellent, reliable administrative stills.
- A team player, also with the ability to take initiative and think strategically.
- Preferably, some knowledge of Catholic Liturgical Music, including Gregorian Chant.
- Sensitive to the Christian ethos and worship of the Catholic Church. Applications are also welcome from non-Catholics.
